Anatomy of a Composition - Finding Fall (Buffalo Pass II)

October is easily my favorite month. The transformation of the landscape with the changing of the leaves has always been the best part of this season. I do love the wildflower season in the Colorado High-Country, and winter snow has a way of transporting us to a completely different world. Even with this competition I am most at peace, in the woods, as the green hues begin to recede, allowing the mahogany, amber, magenta and an enumerable count of shades of yellow to explode onto the scene.

I’ve stated here before that most of my photography around Steamboat has been of the winter scenery and the starry summer nights. So, while I was certainly intimidated by the thought of capturing images of autumn here, this one, long weekend in Steamboat offered more questions than answers, and will certainly be a source of exploration in the coming years. This image from Buffalo Pass again highlights the palette of color offered by the Yampa Valley, and these scenes and images will only getting better with more exploring.

Just as a reminder, this year’s calendar is now available and are shipping! It features a collection of shots taken each month from around Colorado to share the unique beauty of the state throughout the entire year. You can preview a Web Gallery for all of the images inside this year’s calendar.

October, 2021 - As always, thank you for the support and for joining me on this adventure.
