Anatomy of a Composition - Ohio Creek Road and the Castle

These scenes will never get old, and I hope that I can pursue them over and over in the coming years. This year was no exception to this maxim - to drive and sleep and hike and wait. In each instance the scene unfolds at its own pace and in its own way.

The Castle is a remnant of a prehistoric volcano, and while it isn’t a singular unique feature the setting just west of Ohio Pass adds such dynamic color especially this time of year. Whether sitting on the overlook from Ohio Pass or hiking a few miles in from the different trailheads along Ohio Creek Road, the views are absolutely breathtaking. The miles of Aspens going through their annual ritual of changing from a vibrant green through the seemingly innumerable shades of yellow, orange and red would seem to only fit into a Seurat painting.

This scene is all too real and a warming one at that. The light from the sun glowing on the top of the Aspens could not have been more perfect. With clouds towering over the Castle and the recent snows still clinging to their perches a classic image unfolded and I couldn’t have been happier to have witnessed it.
