Anatomy of a Composition - Remains of a Day
These fields present a real test in mindfulness - I don’t think I can state it any other way. You have acres of yellow and green hues in shapes of more variety than can be counted, combined with some of the most quintessential Colorado sky, and to simply sit with it would be enough.
The frenzy that can inhabit oneself while trying to photograph this kaleidoscope of images is equal parts enthusiastic and alarming. Forgetting certain camera settings and not shooting with a proper exposure will ruin an entire evening's collection. There were definitely shoots that I would redo if I could, but more importantly I hope to take that experience and the knowledge I gained into the next outing, so that fewer images are photographed, but more memories are made.
This must then be the paradox of the creative - needing to immerse oneself in all the beauty surrounding them, while not losing the beauty just for the moment. But again, that’s all we get to have, a collection of moments.
So, as the remains of the day disappeared into a fuchsia glow, I searched frantically for a composition to silhouette it under - of the six or so images photographed of this particular scene, the clouds are out of skew, or the focus is clear, but this one was just right; a last light on the sunflowers and a stunning, Western sky.
If you would like to see some of my work in person, I was able to put up more images at Banded Oak Brewing, in downtown Denver. Banded Oak is one of Denver’s finest micro-breweries. It has won Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival and is most known for their barrel-age technique. They have renovated the brewing area to accommodate more seating, and the amble wall space offers great natural light for viewing the different pieces of art. The tap-house is open 7-days a week, and is located at: 470 North Broadway, Denver CO
Follow the Banded Oak Web-Gallery link to view the work that is on display, and even though this image is not hanging at the gallery, I would be happy to create a large, custom print for you.
