Anatomy of a Composition - Time Travelers

Park County - 12,000 feet in elevation. This grove of Bristlecones has lived and breathed for just over 1,000 years. The Bristlecone pines are not as common in Colorado as they are in California and other Western states, but we have three different groves of this ancient trees, and I intend to photograph all three this summer.

A quick trip to the mountains to do some work necessitated an overnight stay. I headed up early to capture the Milky Way one night in one location, and was rewarded with a second night in another. In between the Bristlecone pines created a perfect setting for an early June, Colorado sunset. There were storms to the south over the Park, with lightening strikes all along the Mosquito Range. It wasn’t certain that any color would prevail, but practicing patience was rewarded with a beautiful display of light and clouds.

These millennial creatures, the truest time travelers we will ever experience, were willing to be framed in the fading light, as the golden hues changed and softened to a beautiful blue.
