Anatomy of a Composition - the proper function of man is to live, not to exist
Summer is always a bit strange and unpredictable. Over the past 28 of them, there are only two that had a remote similarity. There certainly have been common themes, camping, children, traveling, learning; trying to unplug while seeking out new opportunities to grow in my photography have become the most consistent theme over the past five of them.
After a trial three years ago with a smaller drone, I did decide to make a second purchase earlier this year of a larger, more comprehensive one. In that same time new rules have been added to Federal law, which while cumbersome, were definitely needed. This includes not only clarification of regulation, but set up guidelines of use, especially as it relates to commercial use. Commercial use has one common denominator, and that denominator is simply defined as receiving any sort of payment for the product or service that you provide with your drone.
Since getting the new drone most of my time with it has been spent working on the flying, filming and editing skills - simply putting time in, in different locations and different times of day and then working through the video footage. Mostly this work has ended up on YouTube for my own enjoyment, but the whole process has been incredibly gratifying. To that end, with FAA requirements and monetizing potential becoming more and more real, it was time to spend money on a course and complete the FAA Part 107 test in order to gain the remote pilot’s license.
That’s what much of this past week has been about; two long days in the classroom along with two evenings of practice test all in preparation for a final that took most of a Friday morning. I did pass the test, though I will need to wait a few weeks for my official documents to arrive. In the meantime I will continue to fly, but with much more knowledge about the task at hand but also my responsibilities as a remote pilot.
With all of this I do intend to post more specific drone work, both still images and video work, and hopefully continue to have entertaining stories to go along with them.
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. - Jack London
