Anatomy of a Composition - Super-Moon
The “super-moons” haven’t been as prolific as last year, in fact this is actually the first one we’ve had. With COVID restrictions lifted I was able to get to a rooftop finally and didn’t need to make a mad dash up the mountain before going into work like last year. The weather gave a least a little bit of a break this morning, but the moonrises have been clouded over and I think this was the best opportunity for a moon over Mt. Evans.
Since living downtown I’ve grown accustomed to missing some of the more epic vistas that are offered either in the mountains or far out on the plains. It’s easy enough to adjust a schedule on a day-to-day basis to get out to that specific local and capture the epic sunrise or sunset. But I’ve often wondered about living higher up? What would it be like to see the world and see these changes from 20 or 30 stories up? Could you wake up fog bound one morning, or watch the moon glow on an eerie see of clouds below? The vantage point for time-lapse and nighttime compositions would truly be unique.
At one point I lived in the shadow of Mt. Rosalie, the peak featured in this image, and was able to hike, bike and ski, while exploring the hills and trails around it. I wasn’t seriously pursuing photography at that point, but just wanted to be outside taking in all of the different views. Mt. Bierstadt and Mt. Evans are the two prominent peaks sitting over the metro area, and having been able to summit each at different points, they stand out for both their vistas as well as their access to wilderness within a few hours drive of the city. Today I have to be a bit more thoughtful about getting out, and just how long I have in a given day to shoot, but I always know that I just need to look west for some beautiful inspiration.
Also, don’t forget, this work will be hanging up at Bruz Beers this month! Their address is 1675 W 67th Ave #100, Denver, CO 80221. Bruz offers a large, open gallery space with fantastic lighting, and great seating both in and out of doors. Bruz has food on-site and partners with food trucks on a daily basis so you’re sure find something that satisfies.
This was shot the last week of April, but the post is the first for the new month - so welcome to May, 2021 - As always, thank you for joining me on this adventure.
