Anatomy of a Composition - A Gore Range Testament

The Gore Range in the central mountains of Colorado boasts some of the state's true, rugged beauty. While it doesn’t contain any of Colorado’s famed 14’ers, it is made up of a number of designated wilderness areas, meaning few roads cut into the more pristine areas. Foot traffic is the only congestion one will find here, and even that is rare.

The Range is bounded by the Colorado River to the north, and the Ten Mile Range and Continental Divide to the south. This means that the wilderness gently slopes towards the river gorge, in an almost imperceptible cascade, but enough of one that the incongruity of the Range becomes even more apparent.

In the years of hurtling past this section of the state, I could always feel that pull, that headlong falling, though I could never pinpoint the source. The analogy of a life out of control, tumbling and bouncing towards a certain calamity isn’t lost on hindsight. Like the Range, I’ve felt the ever-present pull of greater forces; with the mountains eventually meeting their fate in the forces of erosion and translation, while I wasn’t ever sure of what really was driving my frantic pace, I now better understand it’s perilous nature and hope to better navigate it’s pull.
