Anatomy of a Composition - Man in the Moon

“Now, Andy did you hear about this one? Tell me are you locked in a punch? Andy are you goofing on Elvis? Hey, baby, hey baby, are we losing touch?”

This song came out in 1992, the same year that Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida. Prior to the release of that song, and a month before the hurricane hit Miami, another Andrew made an appearance - MY Andrew. My son…

What lesson he’s taught me over the years, I’ll never be able to repay. And what memories he’s shared with me in that same time frame, fill my heart with such complete and immense joy. We built a car together, along numerous, numerous fishing stories. We’ve fought epic Super-Smash Brother’s battles, and traveled thousands of real and imagined roads. The number of times we’ve shared “Prost!” I can never, ever count. But one things will always ring true, whenever a particular R.E.M. song plays, my mind races back, to a July day, when two scared twentysomethings welcomed an Andrew to the world, and he forever changed theirs worlds, and put them on the moon.

“If you believed they put a man on the moon, man on the moon If you believe there's nothing up his sleeve, then nothing is cool.”
